President Obama and leaders of both political parties are meeting in late February to launch what the President hopes will be a bipartisan approach to health care. We as Catholics have several concerns about what may or may not be included in any future legislation on health care.
Among the issues of concern to many Catholics are these:
We oppose any effort to expand abortion funding or to mandate abortion coverage.
We need to see appropriate safeguards for adequately funded health care for the elderly, especially in cases of those with terminal illness.
We absolutely oppose any attempt to remove all conscience clauses for physicians, nurses and other health care workers and any attempt to force Catholic hospitals to provide service inconsistent with our teachings.
