San Damiano CrossThe Secular Franciscan Order is a canonically established order for the laity who have a desire to live more fully a Gospel way of life in imitation of St. Francis who founded the order more than 750 years ago. There are more than 30,000 members in the United States. Secular Franciscans believe they have been called by the Spirit of God to live the Gospel, a vocation lived out in fraternity and through the support of shared prayer and Christian service. Professed members are not called to leave the world but to transform it. We remain in our families, in our work, and maintain and deepen friendships, striving through our lives to become proclamations of the Gospel, challenging us, and those around us, to change.

Secular Franciscans come from parishes in Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head Island. We welcome anyone who would like to “come and see.” Gatherings begin with Holy Mass at 8:00am, followed by morning prayer, breakfast, reading and reflections on a Gospel passage, with study time focusing on Franciscan spirituality.

The fraternity has two apostolates in which all members attempt to become involved:
(1) visiting the sick and elderly in nursing homes and hospitals on a regular basis; and (2) being responsible for promoting and encouraging
Eucharistic adoration, as well as scheduling of pledged adorers and generally monitoring hours of adoration.

May the Lord give you peace!

The Secular Franciscan Order Fraternity, Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, wishes to thank you for the use of St. Francis by the Sea parish kitchen this past Saturday, September 29th, for our "5th Saturday" Apostolate.  We prepared meals for the HAPIN program.  Our Franciscan chefs and chef assistants peeled, chopped, cooked and then packaged containers of 37 minestone soups, 9 beef stews, 24 chicken drumsticks with roasted potatoes and carrots, 3 roasted veggies.

Franciscan Flapjack Flip for Funds for a Future Friar

Jim & Sue Taylor of our parish, professed members of the Secular Franciscan Order of the Fraternity of Brother Francis in Hickory and the members of the Secular Franciscan Order of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Mary Fraternity of Hilton Head Island, combined efforts for a Fun Filled Flapjack Flip for a Future Franciscan Friar recently.  The pancake breakfast at St. Francis by the Sea on the island raised $2200 for Mark Holt of our parish to help with expenses during his first year of study.
