Backpack Buddies

Contact: Bill Burger

“Packing Meetings” at St. Francis are normally held on the second Thursday of the month in the Family Center and distribution to school classrooms is done every Friday.

Mission Statement: Backpack Buddies (BPB) is part of a national program which was created to help provide nutritious food to the neediest grammar school children who qualify for subsidized lunches during the week, but may go hungry on weekends. Approximately 50% of Hilton Head grammar school children meet this criteria and Backpack Buddies of Hilton Head was initiated in 2010 to start providing this support.

Current Activities: St. Francis is a packing site for one of three Hilton Head public grammar schools. We use volunteer help for several tasks, including: stocking food supplied by Sysco delivered from St. Andrew’s, helping to set up and pack the individual bags once per month in the Family center, and distributing the packed bags to the school classrooms each Friday.
